The Namib

Earth is the oldest element, and the Namib is the oldest desert on it. Standing in sand that has lain still for millions of years makes you small and completely present at once. A journey into deep time and your own scale against it. You come alone because the encounter is between you and the age of the world.
A Sense of the Days
The scale of the Namib requires slow movement. You will rise before dawn to enter the Sossusvlei dunes—the highest in the world—and watch the light transform them from violet to copper to blazing orange. The cracked white clay of the Deadvlei pan holds ancient blackened trees that have stood dead for nine hundred years, surrounded by towering dunes. It is one of the most quietly extraordinary landscapes on earth.
Later, you might take a “Living Dunes” walk to understand the small, resilient ecosystem that survives here, or a nature drive to see oryx, zebra, and other desert-adapted wildlife moving freely across the reserve. There is time for e-biking across the gravel plains or self-guided walks, finding your own solitude in the sand. At night, the observatory opens to a sky untouched by light pollution—the Milky Way so dense it casts a shadow.
The Lodge
&Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge sits on a private 31,000-acre reserve bordering the NamibRand International Dark Sky Reserve. We take exclusive use of all 10 glass-walled villas. Each villa features a private plunge pool and a skylight positioned directly over the bed, so you fall asleep watching stars. The lodge is roughly 85% solar-powered and operates on genuine conservation land where the wildlife is wild and free, never staged. It includes a walk-in wine cellar for lantern-lit dinners and its own stargazing observatory with high-powered telescopes.
